A well-arranged living room feels calm and welcoming, even before you add a single accessory. Before you move anything, think about how you actually use the room: watching films, reading, chatting with friends or all of the above.
Find your focal point
Every living room needs a focal point, whether it’s a fireplace, a large window or the TV. Arrange your main seating to face or frame it, then build the rest of the room around that view.
Float the sofa
Pushing every piece against the walls can make a room feel like a waiting room. If you have the space, pull the sofa forward and place a console or a pair of side tables behind it. It creates a cosier, more intentional layout.
Create a conversation area
Place chairs so people can talk without raising their voices or twisting around. A pair of armchairs opposite the sofa, or an accent chair at an angle, works well. Pieces like the Oscar Wood Frame Armchair have open frames that keep the room feeling light.
Leave room to move
- Keep clear walkways through the room so nobody has to squeeze past furniture.
- Make sure every seat has a surface nearby for a drink or a book.
- Use a rug large enough for at least the front legs of your sofa and chairs to sit on.
Arrange for conversation first, then for the view.
Finish with lighting at different levels, such as a table lamp, a floor lamp and wall lights, and your living room will feel balanced, comfortable and ready for every evening in.
